It’s been another exciting evening in the Whitebytts household. Major Dickie caught up with Heston Bloomin-eck’s latest offering and has spent the entire evening concocting in the kitchen. After several hours he has only succeeded in making the cover section of the recipe though the kitchen looks as if a assail has hit it. The results undergo been exciting but not really up to Heston’s standard - Suffice it to say -  we do now have some excellent loft insulation - which even the resident mice won’t be able to gnaw their way through! I was searching for this kind of a blog for months now. Actually lost the wish of finding one but here i am Thanks for the great articles! "Not much is funny about Alaska corruption scandals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 18:01:11

I’ve been delaying doing that for one good cerebrate. The main one being is that when I choose a topic for a funny column. I have one hard-and-fast command that I always try to follow. The topic has got to be funny. That being said there is very little that I find funny with the current state of affairs of Alaska politics. Sad yes. Pathetic even more so. Let me impel in “sickening” and “disgusting” for good decide. say that I said in the beginning there was “very little” that I open amusing which means that there are at least a bring together of things out there that have produced a minor express joy or a stifled guffaw. For instance. I open it amusing that Sen. Ben Stevens was taped referring to Rep. Jay Ramras as an “expletive salesman.” Funny and dead do by! I went to the Food Factory for dinner last week and couldn’t find a single expletive for sale on the menu. Stevens obviously needs to get his facts straight. Then there was former Veco executive Bill Allen’s courtroom testimony in which he said that he gave Rep. Vic Kohring $1,000 but it was partly because Kohring was sleeping in his office (Kohring’s office not Allen’s) and sometimes didn’t have any money to buy food. I’m going to accuse Stevens for this. Had Stevens not been going around the capitol saying that Ramras was an “expletive salesman” and instead been saying he was a “cheesesteak salesman,” Kohring might have caught wind of this and could have begged Ramras to toss a bring together of hoagies and some curly fries his way. Whether it be the FBI sweeping in on Sen. Ted Stevens’ domiciliate in Girdwood like they were the crew from “Extreme Makeover: domiciliate Edition,” Pete Kott allegedly pledging to Allen that he is going to “get ‘er done,” or Kohring (rhymes with whoring) allegedly selling his soul to Veco just so he can go out and buy some Top Ramen like some starving college freshman the whole thing has cast a dark follow on Alaska politics that make our gold go political dealings seem as squeaky clean as Jimmy Stewart in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” In Fairbanks politics we believe E. T. Barnette a crooked politician. But my son goes to a educate named after him so he couldn’t undergo been all that bad. There’s a pretty good come about that Anchorage isn’t going to be breaking fasten for the “Pete Kott Elementary School” anytime soon. I like this state as much as the next lifelong Alaskan but I am finding it more and more difficult to be a back for the express when those that we elect to bring about the Last Frontier are causing us to sink faster than the Titanic. But I do care about Ted Stevens. Say what you will about the recent allegations or him stating that the Internet is powered by donkeys the fact of the matter is that Alaska is a better state because of him. It would be a real compel if this turns out to be his swan song and what he is remembered for. And it will be a real shame if this leads to payback time for Alaska in the U. S. Senate by those who have been disgruntled over Uncle Ted’s seniority and the be of money he has managed to send our way. I do find a saving grace in all of this and that is that our Interior delegation appears to be removed from the crap that is going drink with Veco. Go Fairbanks! change surface better it appears that Veco and the politicians they undergo pocketed don’t change surface like the Interior delegation. This ordain certainly back up Sen. Gene Therriault in the next election when all he has to do is run commercials where he looks at the camera and says “I’m Senator Therriault and account Allen doesn’t desire me.” We are a tough state and we ordain eventually get beyond all of this. But it is going to take time. And if you are an elected official you need to experience that you are going to undergo to work extra hard this year and beyond to help restore the faith of Alaskans in the political affect. It doesn’t matter if you undergo never done anything wrong in your life. If you can use the word “politician” to exposit your occupation you’re going to undergo your hands full if you want we the residents of the greatest express in the union to believe you and experience that you are truly there for us.

"Alaska scientists were first to spot Sputnik 50 years ago" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:50:06

On any clear dark night you can see them gliding through the sky and reflecting sunlight from the other side of the world. Man-made satellites now orbit our planet by the thousands and it’s hard to gaze without seeing one. The inky black upper atmosphere was less busy 50 years ago when a few young scientists stepped out of a trailer near Fairbanks to be up into the cold October sky. Gazing upward they saw the moving dot that started it all the Russian-launched Sputnik 1. Those Alaskans working for the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks were the first North American scientists to see the satellite which was the coat and shape of a basketball and at 180 pounds weighed about as much as a inform guard. The Alaska researchers studied radio astronomy at the campus in Fairbanks. They had their own tracking station in a clearing in the plant come Ballaine Lake on the northern portion of university land. This station set up to study the aurora and other features of the upper atmosphere enabled the scientists to be create from raw material when a reporter called the initiate with news of the Russians’ secret open of the world’s first man-made satellite. Within a half hour of that label an official with the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D. C called Geophysical initiate Deputy Director C. Gordon Little with radio frequencies that Sputnik emitted. It was measure to scramble. “The scientists at the initiate poured out of their offices like stirred-up bees,” wrote a reporter for the “Farthest North Collegian,” the UAF campus newspaper. Crowded into a trailer full of equipment about a mile north of their offices the scientists received the radio beep-beep-beep from Sputnik and were able to reason its orbit. They figured it would be visible in the northwestern sky at about 5 a m the next day. On that morning three of them — Joe Pope. Bob Leonard and Gian Carlo Rumi — stepped outside the trailer to see what Little described as “a bright star-like disapprove moving in a slow graceful turn across the sky desire a very decrease shooting feature.” For the preserve scientists may not have been the first Alaskans to see Sputnik. In a 1977 article the founder of this column. T. Neil Davis described how his dwell. Dexter Stegemeyer said he had seen “a strange moving star go up out of the west” as he was sitting in his outhouse. The New York Times’ Oct. 7. 1957 edition included a front-page headline of “SATELLITE SEEN IN ALASKA,” and Sputnik caused a big fuss all over the country. People wondered about the implications of the Soviet object looping over America every 98 minutes and whether it meant the Russians also had the smarts to create ballistic missiles that could carry nuclear warheads from Europe to the United States. Within a year. Congress voted to create NASA. Fears about Sputnik evaporated as three months later the U. S launched its own satellite. Explorer 1 and eventually took the lead in the go for space. Fifty years later satellites are a part of everyday life. The Global Positioning System network allows precise navigation by airplane pilots hikers and others and gives scientists the ability to track to movement of Earth’s plates which press along at about the speed that our fingernails grow. Satellites also have given us the first be at sea ice from above and this go they show an open Northwest Passage (more information is online at ). The next time you see a air streaking through the night sky remember the first scientist on this continent to see one was standing right here in Alaska. And the first non-scientist to see a air in North America was sitting alter here in Alaska.

"Debarkation - Whittier, Alaska, United States" posted by ~Ray

32,548 travel experiences from 152 countries shared this week • • Who is in journey Inside Passage. Visit family in Anchorage. We received a call saying that our ride (my nephew from Anchorage) had arrived. And with that we ventured off the displace for the measure time and entered the world of Whittier. AK. Whittier is different as small towns go. To me it had the appearance of being either something out of a story some planned community out of the or some futuristic nestled on the narrowest of strips of land between the ocean and a mountain. The town is mainly two apartment buildings one of which houses most of the residents and some fishing boats. Unless you arrive by ride (or possibly seaplane) the other way in and out is the Whittier cut into a 2.5 mile desire one-lane corridor through the mountain. The cut into is actually an old railway (comfort in use) that was converted to accept automobiles to use it too. The toll was $12 which you pay going in. No charge to get Whittier. Close to midnight the tunnel shuts drink completely! No one goes in or out unless you want to bring up over the mountain. It doesn't reopen until 5:30 the next morning. If any emergency services are needed in that time they undergo to be airlifted from Anchorage about 50 miles away. Not far from the cut into exit heading out of Whittier is the. "Day 10 -- Tok, Alaska, to Fairbanks, Alaska" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 20:07:40

Finally! Fairbanks! The conclusion of my quest. The answer to my 10-day challenge. No more packing my cram in and out of my car. No more fumbling with maps at stoplights. No more driving through suburban neighborhoods hitting “call back communicate list” continually until I sight my victim usually named linksys. At the end. Finished. Now what the hell do I do?My morning in Tok was rather frustrating. I had to get some laundry done (no underwear or pants left) but I had no cash having cleared my wallet before entering Canada. Since Tok was a ghost town -- desire most Northern highway cities in September -- all the ATMs were dry. With no coins. I slumped back to the laundry room scooped up the clothes I had left there and trudged toward the door. But luckily the manager of the hotel was doing his final fill before skipping town. He stopped me and handed me $4 in quarters. “I get it all back anyway,” he said. His name was Dell. He moved to Alaska to back up create the pipeline and now tends to the hotel and spends his winters hunting from his confine outside of Delta Junction. That’s the kind of thing you can do up here: live off of whatever you hunt. No wonder there are few taxes. There certainly aren’t the resources to bring in down anyone who wants to go missing in this vast of a express. I left for Fairbanks at about noon. I called the desk chief who was on vacation and she gave me the telecommunicate be of the sports editor. Bob. I was set to come down at his place until I found an apartment. Somehow. I turned a 5 into a 3 while writing drink his domiciliate be so I arrived in Fairbanks with only the address of the newspaper office and a vague memory of a map of the downtown area. That was good enough to get me to the News-Miner which was closed. They don’t print on fight Day. Thanksgiving. Christmas or Memorial Day which means that newsroom employees get the day before off. Yup. 30 minutes here and already things have drastically changed; Dec. 24 is my new Christmas. It was sunny and about 75 degrees so I pulled off my sweatshirt and roamed around the immediate area of the building inspecting the local bars that would likely change state my regular 2 a m tune-up. I caught a see of someone walking into the paper from across the street and flagged him down when he got near a window on the first surprise. It was probably a janitor but I was running with an exploratory animate. It paid off. He was Eric the business writer. Every newspaper needs someone present at all decent hours. Eric had pulled the bunco cover and was stuck in the office just in case something explodes or the mayor is shot. He didn’t undergo Bob’s number (it turns out he has no cell telecommunicate either) but he did undergo an address. He jotted down some directions in reporter write gawd-awful chicken scratch I couldn’t undergo deciphered four years ago before I mouth writing desire that myself. Bob lives about seven blocks away from the News-Miner and about five from the downtown area. This area somehow maintains a well-to-do suburban challenge despite its location. I parked out front (Eric’s description of “a jungle of a front yard” was spot-on) and tried the doorbell. No one. I knocked. Nothing. Looks like I’d just have to act for Bob to go domiciliate. But then I heard a go from inside. A consume. Good. I thought at least he’s home. I took a walk along the nearby Chena River to blackball time until he was out and dressed. But en retour. I saw a car backing out onto Bob’s street. Was it the same car I had seen in his driveway? Looked like it so I began frantically waving and running (this is the back up measure that day I had done it and I was somewhat worried it would become my signature act). No avail. The car turned down Fourth Street and I tried knocking once more but the accommodate was certainly alter this time. I camped out in my car with the windows drink and passed measure by writing the Tok part of this post. A 50-something man ambled by the car walking in a swerving manner. I paid him no attention until he picked up some trash from Bob’s yard. It was him. To say that Bob a local legend is putting it mildly. Robert Eley is pronounced just like Robert E. Lee so anytime you forget his label you can just ask for “The command,” and most locals will know who you’re talking about. He’s been on the city council run for mayor and collected a mental dossier on nearly every resident of metropolitan Fairbanks. These days he’s circumscribe with just being the News-Miner’s sports editor operating the city museum and frequenting The Big I. Fairbanks’ most popular bar -- where you can order a “Bob Eley”: 50% vodka. 50% go lemonade and a move of scatter. He greeted me with a smile and a lazy-eyed grin confessing he had just returned from a bar and was a little tipsy. Fine by me. He was head of a four-person sports staff whose coverage area was more than a million acres. This makes days off quite rare so spending an afternoon with a few cold ones is warranted. He took me inside and made a grand gesture toward the living room couch. “This is where your new life begins,” he said. He’s seen many new lives begin in that spot. Crashing at Bob’s is a News-Miner rite of passage. We shot the blow for a while as he picked carrots and celery from his tend. Yes that’s right: Produce does grow up here. In fact the veggies that can handle the all-light days of pass grow quickly and anyone with a tend can render a years worth of crops in three months. We were talking next to a conjoin of fireweed that stands about 10 feet tall. journey buses frequently control by as it’s the best example of fireweed in town. I din't belive him until one drove by. We got dinner at Big Daddy’s Bar-BQ. I didn‘t be my first meal here to be something I could undergo approve home so I ordered the halibut fish ’n’ chips. Bob teased me but I didn’t care. I figured I’ve had better grill somewhere in the South anyway. After dinner we headed to The Big I the pub Bob had just retuned from. He bought me color & tans as we gave each other our biographies and waxed poetic about the upcoming NFL season. We got home at about 1 a m. and a fellow copy editor had left a communicate inviting me to a bonfire. It began with "bait? Josh? Jo-osh? bait? Are you there Josh? ..." And there I was half-asleep mostly drunk hearing my label repeated 11 times. I laughed for about 10 minutes. The measure 10 days had caught up with me. I’ve never slept so well on a articulate.

"Arctic Circle - Coldfoot, Alaska, United States" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 17:08:10

An early start again to drive to Fairbanks. Fairbanks was founded on gold and then on black gold – oil. We saw the Trans Alaska Pipeline which goes across Alaska – from Valdez ( where the fated tanker got its label) in the South to Dead cater in the North. Half of the pipeline is underground and it zig zags its way across the tundra – about 800 mile. I evaluate. They had to consider two things when building it – one was earthquakes which are a very common thing up here and these are still changing the topography of Alaska. Anchorage had a severe earthquake doing a lot of alter and so the pipeline sits on a coat that floats on the rest that the pipe is on. The other cerebrate is the permafrost which is the hide that is permanently frozen which is under a lot of Fairbanks and Alaska. It is the forge under the alter and is permafrost if it has not thawed in two years. Evidently roads change state bumpy and it is difficult for road construction but we didn’t notice it too much. They had a system to verify the change oil didn’t melt the permafrost otherwise the pipeline would just sink. They had fins on the align of the struts that were filled with ammonium ??? that also has a low boiling point which took the heat away from the permafrost back up into the atmosphere. As you can imagine the building of the pipeline was enormously expensive but the oil has made many of the native races very rich as it was found on traditional land. Fairbanks is very cold in pass going down to minus 40 to 60 and in the lay of winter the sun may go about 11am and set about 1pm. Equally in pass they can play all sorts of sports starting at midnight and not need any form of artificial lights. The guide said the only people in Fairbanks are those who undergo to be there (US Forces) and those who are running away from something. It reminded me a bit of Kalgoolie – founded on gold. He said the red light govern was called the red develop govern as in Summer there is no need for lights. Everything was warmed including the footpaths in the town (about 35,000 people)where big pipes blew warm air produced by gas. Gold miners built gun barrel log huts – so called because if you opened the front and approve door you could blast a shot right through. We went on a boat ride ride down the Chanana river. Saw some lovely log houses a ride dog camp a traditional Athabasken fish camp and village which had been all set up commercially – but it was very good. Then came what I had been waiting for – the pip over the Arctic Circle. The weather was OK so I felt confident. We set off at 7pm in a twin engine Navajo Chieftan plane with 7 aboard with the pilot and yours truly parked up the front as the co-pilot. We flew over more tundra which at first was pretty and the advance north we got the more remote wild unpopulated and leave it became – but no come down or ice yet – in a few more weeks. We crossed the Yukon River flowing east to west bisecting the express of Alaska. – for 7 months it is frozen over – wide but alter and could imagine the gold miners there years ago. At 66.33 degrees north the control congratulated us on crossing the Arctic go. We flew between the Brooks Mountain be and landed at Coldfoot which again was an old mining stop located at mile 175 of the Dalton Highway and were then taken by van along the Dalton Highway for about 45 minutes to Wiseman where a few people be in a little village completely self sufficient. They catch salmon and consume them during early summer and then injure a moose or caribou for meat. The few log houses were made from logs they had cut and then put lichen in the cracks. We didn’t see the people but we disbelieve if they were full Athabasken as the houses looked more desire miners cabins. There was a small school which had been built but now the 2/3 children there are domiciliate schooled. There was a tiny museum and by this time it was 10pm and just getting dark. We went back to Coldfoot and he took us to the truck forbid – the one and only place besides the airstrip in the displace. It looked desire a truck stop that you would see in our outback – huge trucks outside – alter ones going south full going north - some tired alter truckies having a hearty meal in a small café area selling steak and coffee. The Dalton Highway which we were on is the one and only highway north and was built as a draw road for the pipeline. The pipeline was constructed in 1974 – 77 and the road became public in 1980. It is bumpy because of the permafrost below but not as bad as some of our roads. The truckies earn up to US$250,000 per annum driving the 416mile icy highway. Back in the plane in the fling dark it was just a inspect of trusting to God luck and the pilot as we took off into the darkness approve over the tundra and mountains. The lights of Fairbanks were accept and the control was very good so we arrived safely at midnight having been to the most northern sight we will probably get. We had hoped to see the Aura Borialis (Northern Lights) but all conditions.
